Configuring Gateway and Database Servers

As provided in the installation media, Sapphire/Web is properly configured to communicate with the Gateway daemon executing on the local machine. The remainder of this section provides an overview of this configuration.

The resource file for configuring Gateway communication is $XAPPLRESDIR/DbuimxOrb.

Note: There can be more than one Gateway daemon running on the network at a given time; a client application can specify to which Gateway it wants to connect. See the User's Guide for information on this sort of configuration.

Sybase

The Gateway needs to know the name and location of all database servers available on the network. It determines this information from the file $SYBASE/interfaces (where the environment variable SYBASE is defined as the directory in which Sybase is installed). It is not necessary to have Sybase installed on every machine where a Gateway daemon may execute. All that is required is that the $SYBASE/interfaces file be accessible from each machine on which a Gateway daemon may execute. See the User's Guide.

Oracle

If only one database is needed by the Gateway and its clients, use the ORACLE-SID environment variable to specify it. If multiple Oracle databases are necessary, you must make use of the OracleDatabase resource in the $XAPPLRESDIR/DbuimxOrb resource file. See the User's Guide for more information.

Informix

The Gateway learns the name and location of all database servers from the file $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts (where the environment variable INFORMIXDIR is defined as the directory in which Informix is installed). It is not necessary to have Informix installed on every machine where the Gateway daemon may execute. It is required that the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file be accessible from each machine on which a Gateway daemon may execute. Also, the /etc/services file on each machine must be set up properly for each Informix on-line service port.
